Surf Life Saving

It was a nice, warm day on the 9th of December 2013, perfect weather for surf life saving. At our school, the year 4's and 5's walked to North Wai to learn about surf life saving and how to surf. We had to wear wetsuits with our togs underneath. Some people didn't have wetsuits so we borrowed some of the club's wetsuits.

We got separated into 2 groups, one of the groups learnt about beach safety, while the other group learnt how to surf with with Clare, Darnielle, Michael, Mark, Nick, and Nick. My group surfed first. It was really fun. But the surf boards were heavy. 

When we swapped over, a guy called Cameron taught us about the beach. Then we had a sandcastle competition. There was first, second and third place, me, Jessica's and Verity's sandcastle came third. 

Thanks to all the people who helped out with the surfing, I had an amazing day

Pet Day

On the 19th of November, New Brighton Catholic school had a pet day. I do not agree with the results.

I think Duggie, a dog who never licks anyone, doesn't shed, doesn't bark and just sits there looking adorable, should've won pet day.

I am very disappointed with the results and if I was judging, I would definitely pick Duggie. That is why I think everyone should vote on the best pets.

Why wouldn't anyone not vote on Duggie? He is the cutest dog ever! Don't you love dogs who let you do anything to them? I think some pets should be able to go to our school(like Duggie) but not pets that are loud or hypo.

So next pet day I hope I will be happy with the results.

Dancing Like The Stars

On Tuesday 24th September, all the year 5 children went to the Aurora Centre to dance like they have been doing for the last 8 weeks. We have had a dancing teaching called Melody. I was very nervous in the car. When we got there, the girls got their makeup done, and the boys got their black stripes on their faces. When the makeup was finished, the other schools started coming in. Then the teaches took some photos of us in a group, the last photo was all of us on a lean. The performance started at 6:00 pm. At about 5:30, we started to take a seat in the place that we were going to dance. The room was huge!Our group was the first performance of the night. Then the host called out our school and we hopped on the stage. The stage was massive!!Then the music started playing and we started the dance. All the boys were back stage, then when the girls finished there dance the boys come running out and the girls sat on the edge of the stage. When the boys finished there bit, the girls ran back on the stage and got in there position. When the dance was over, the audience started clapping and we left the stage. Then the other schools started dancing and we weren't nervous any more.

At the end the host taught all the children a dance, it was cool!The host won the 2006 New Zealand Dancing Like The Stars. When we were leaving, Mum and Dad bought us Chinese from the restaurant called China Kitchen. It was yummy!! I thought it was fun watching the other schools dance because they were all different.

The Magic Unicorn

Many years ago, there lived a beautiful, Snow White unicorn. The unicorn was magic, she was so powerful she was able to transfer her powers to others. One morning, when the unicorn was eating some leaves in the enchanted forest, she heard some rustling in a nearby bush. Then out came the most ugly thing she's ever seen... a WITCH! The witch had long, black, stringy hair and a wart on her nose. She was wearing a long, stained purple dress. Then she took out a dart and through it at the unicorn, the unicorn almost instantly fell asleep. The witch carried her all the way back to her evil castle. When the unicorn woke up she was trapped in a filfy dungeon. Just then the witch came out with a huge razer-sharp knife. A KNIFE! The witch said" I will cut of your magic horn, and soon I will be so powerful!" Then she filled up a bowl of water and grabbed a pile of grass to give to the unicorn. Then she left. The unicorn was hungry so she ate some of the grass the wicked witch had given her. Outside the evil castle, a little girl was walking through the enchanted forest. She stopped at the dungeon's window and saw the horse staring back at her. The girl sneaked in the dungeon and using her key- shaped necklace, unlocked the door to the dungeon and  set the unicorn free. But just as the girl and the unicorn were leaving, the witch came and chased them down the forest until it came to a river, the girl hopped on the unicorns back and jumped over the river, and the witch jumped but fell in the river. But the river wasn't water, it was lava! In seconds the witch had disappeared into the bubbling lava

Tree Cutting

        

                                       Tree cutting!!!!

In the Domain at our school there are Woodcutters chopping down the big tree.When we were young we used to call that special tree Uncle Steve.He was very kind and was there when we needed him most.At the moment his branches are falling down,I couldn't watch much longer,it was too sad to watch.Well we don't really pay much attention to Uncle Steve any more anyway but he is still a part of our life,well was a part of our life!!!

End Ball with North New Brighton School

This is Hannah from room 3 reporting on End Ball

Last week on Friday, room 3 and 2 walked to North New Brighton school to play against them in End Ball. End Ball is like Netball but there's no hoop.Instead you just have get the ball in a area to get a point. Just before we left we got to see who's group were in. I was with Nicole, Myka, Isla, Ethan, Harry,Lochie, James, and Reuben. The first group we played against is The Zombie Unicorns. It was really fun. And we bet them! Next we played against the year 4s. We won 17-4. It was a really fun day.

                           NBC Soccer

On Wednesday, room 3 and 2 played a Soccer tournament in the domain. We had got put into 9 different groups. We have been playing soccer for about 5 weeks. The groups are called Silly Sausages, Swag Titans, Pumas, Skux Deluxe, Zombie Unicorns, Super Tomatoes, NBC Thunder, War Hawks and Bananas in Pajamas. My group is Skux Deluxe. In my group there is me, Jessica, Myka, James, Isla and Ethan. Over all my team came 2nd and Swag Titans won. The soccer was so fun.

                                                                                                                      

We also got to referee the other teams playing. It is important to play fair and to work as a team. Your team can also get bonus points for playing fair and working together not just for scoring goals.

The Recycling Process.

When you take an old unwanted product and make new materials from them you are recycling. This is a way to reduce waste that ends up in landfill.

It is important to put the right things in the yellow bin. The things that should be put in the yellow bin are plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles, milk bottles, yogurt containers, steel cans, aluminum cans, and news paper. You should not put any other stuff in.

The first place the rubbish goes is in the recycling plant, while in there it gets taken into a white room, In there, there are 5 or 6 people who take out the rubbish that should've been put in the red bin. Next the rest goes through another machine and take's the glass bottles to another conveyor belt. The rest of the rubbish then falls on a different conveyor belt which sorts out the cardboard. Eventually all of the rubbish gets sorted out.

Some of the rubbish gets turned into different materials. Plastic bottles get turned into polyester which makes clothes. Milk bottles get turned into the plastic rubbish bins we have at school.

Hopefully people will recycle so we will stop landfill.
